[ Knowledge Base : Recruiting Policies FAQ (for W20) ]
Created by [ Rowan Dempster] on Dec 24, 2019
This page contains answers to the most frequently asked questions about
WATonomous' policies regarding our internal and external recruitment
processes. It will always be updated to contain information about the
most recent term, now W20, but also holds some generally applicable
information.
Q: What is the W20 internal and external recruitment timeline?
That is specified on this document: W20 General Recruitment
Timeline
That document is pinned in #recruitment
Q: What is the internal recruitment timeline?
Only 2 important dates:
- When you have to put your name on a Returning Member sheet: No
deadline, but do so ASAP.
- When you will be assigned to a Group: Nov 30th at midnight.
If you think there are more dates of interest, ask about them in
#recruitment and they will be added here
Q: When are we recruiting this term or next term?
Recruitment happens in the last 2 months of the term before the term
that we are recruiting for. Example: For the Summer 2019 term, which
starts May 6th, the recruitment season is March 1st through April 31st.
Q: What are Returning Member Sheets, and where can I find them for W20?
Returning Member sheets are Google Spreadsheets that the Director of
each Division uses to survey their members and find out who is returning
to the team for the next term.
Each Director sends their Returning Member sheet in their
#[division]-general channels and tags their Division. But if you
can’t find that message, here are their links:
Q: I am currently on WATO and I want to switch Divisions or Groups for next term, what do I do?
TLDR:
- Put name on Returning Members sheet.
\
- If you are switching Divisions, you will most likely be told to
re-interview, but there are cases in which that is not necessary.
There is also the human resourcing concern: The Group you are
leaving has to okay with giving up a great member such as yourself,
and the Group you are requesting to join has to be looking for new
members.
\
- If you are switching Groups within the same Division, the technical
side of the process is easier, you will likely not have to
re-interview since the Division’s managers already know your skills.
However, the human resources concern is still valid: The Group you
are leaving has to okay with giving up a great member such as
yourself, and the Group you are requesting to join has to be looking
for new members.
Details:
Background
- Please try to only switch Divisions or Groups in between terms, not
in the middle of a term.
- You can only switch to a specific Group, not a specific Squad. Squad
assignments are based on where we need personnel resources.
Actions to take
- Put your information on a Returning Members sheet. There will be a
column where you can indicate what Division and Group you want to
switch to, and what role (Director, Manager, Tech Lead, or Core
Member) you want to switch to.
- Find out who is Managing the Group that you want to join during the
term that you are joining in. Do this using the public channels on
Discord.
- Express your interest in joining the Group to that Manager, and tell
them why you are interested in joining their Group. Understand that
they cannot guarantee your Group assignment.
- Express to your current Group Manager that you would like to try out
something new! If they can still run their Group without you being
their, they will be fine with letting you try out new things.
Q: I am currently on WATO and I want to become a Director, what do I do?
- Talk to the current Team Captain(s) and current Directors(s) about
what is involved with being a Director.
- Indicate this desire by filling out a Returning Member sheet.
Q: I am currently on WATO and I want to become a Manager, what do I do?
- Talk to the current Directors and Managers about what is involved
with being a Manager.
- Indicate this desire by filling out a Returning Member sheet.
Q: When is the deadline for filling in the Returning Member sheet?
This question is answered above under the “What is the internal
recruitment timeline?” question.
Q: Who is doing the external interviews for Directors? For Managers? For Core Members?
Director Interviews are done by: Senior members (i.e. people who
have been on the team for more than 2 terms) will interviewing
Directors.
Manager Interviews are done by: Anyone on the leadership team (i.e.
Captains, Directors, Managers) for the current term, F19, or the next
term, W20.
Core Member Interviews are done by: Anyone on the leadership team,
or any returning Core Member.
