[ Knowledge Base : 1|1 Meeting Policy (One on One) ]

Created by [ Rowan Dempster], last modified on Dec 24, 2019

This policy describes the idea of 1|1 meetings and how they are applied by WATonomous.

What is a 1|1?

1|1s range from 10 to 30 minutes long. There are informal, no preset agenda or minutes. They help with discovering a hidden problem or blocker and are designed to benefit the subordinate, not the manager.

What to cover?

Example of items to cover

Progress

Constructive feedback on their performance

Potential ideas

Blockers; Anything stopping them from moving fast?

Assessing happiness / mood of the report

Create an environment for them to bring up issues and questions!

1|1s at WATO

WATonomous mandates the following 1|1 schedule:

Team Captains have bi-weekly 1|1 conversations with each of the 4 Directors.

Directors have bi-weekly 1|1 conversations with each Manager.

Managers have bi-weekly 1|1 with tech leads and at least 3 core members

Directors and Team Captains also have at least one bi-weekly skip level 1|1 conversation.

  1. For directors: 1|1 with a Core Member (or a Tech Lead in the case of the Software Division)
  2. For captains: 1|1 with a Manager, Teach Lead, or Core Member
