Knowledge Base : Platform Onboarding

Created by Rowan Dempster, last modified on Dec 30, 2019

Use this guide to walk you through getting onboarded onto the technological and physical platforms that WATonomous uses to do our work.

To understand all of the the terms and phrases used in the user guides linked below, you might want to peruse the Team Structure and Policies section of the Knowledge Base first. However, it is not necessary, and you will be fine reading the other sections of the Knowledge Base at your leisure.

Communication → Discord

Discord is our chosen method of communication. It is very much like Slack, allowing us to make channels to organize our conversations.

Facebook or any other means of digital communication is NOT allowed for communication with WATO members about WATO topics. Discord allows communication to remain transparent and keep record of important conversations.

The first thing you should do is setup Discord, by following the Discord User Guide.

Member Management (and a whole lot more) → GSuite

Everyone on WATonomous automatically has a WATonomous GSuite identity created for them, your username and initial password were given to you in your acceptance email.

To learn about GSuite and its subtools (WATO's Shared Drives, WATO Calendar, WATO Google Groups, etc...), follow the GSuite User Guide.

Source Code Version Control → UW Gitlab

Everyone on WATonomous is automatically added to the WATonomous Gitlab Group, but what permissions you are granted depends on your Division and your role on the team.

To learn more about WATonomous' Gitlab Group, and Git in general, follow the Gitlab User Guide.

Task Management → JIRA

WATonomous hosts its own JIRA instance. When you are accepted onto the team, a JIRA user is created for your. Your username and initial password were given to you in your acceptance email.

To learn more about JIRA, follow the JIRA User Guide.

Technical Knowledge Documentation → GitHub Pages

WATonomous also hosts its own GitHub Pages instance.

To learn more about contributing to our technical documentation, follow the CONTRIBUTING.md.
